E90 Communicator

The versatile thing

Saturday 25 October 2008, by Claude-Eric Desguin

WOMworld, a U.S. website dedicated to Nokia devices, ’discovers’ these days how versatile E90 is. They are asking visitors to comment on this post in describing all the things they do with their Communicator.

Obviously, this is a very late understanding of what a Communicator is nowadays: a micro-PC always in your pocket, offering a complete qwerty or azerty keyboard, a ’serious’ web browser, at least 10 times more autonomy than a laptop, much less system crashes, a boot time that doesn’t measure in minutes but in seconds, and above all a handheld machine capable of doing 90% of the tasks you used to perform with a PC or a laptop before, plus many other tasks a PC will never allow (just two examples amongst many others: answering a phone call on the go, checking where you are with GPS).

So I will not list all the tasks I do with it, they are countless. Just this: the Communicator is naturally intended to be the default computer of anyone having a laptop and an E90. As far I am concerned, my laptop has become my 2nd computer for more than one year.

This would be even more evident if mobile operators (specially in Europe) would stop using prohibitive rates for 3G data connection.

Depending on their own needs, some people may have similar benefits from other handheld multi-purpose machines (Blackberry, Apple, etc.) However, none appeared to be as versatile as E90 when I made a choice, because:

    1. its system appeared to be less manufacturer-dependent than others,

    2. it has a wider variety of communication interfaces,

    3. it has a comprehensive man-machine interface (dual screen and keyboard with large internal screen and keyboard, true audio system, high quality camera) very well integrated into the operating system. I am not really appealed by touch-screens.
